Barkha Patel is an Indian Classical Kathak dancer based in New York. She began her formal training in Kathak at a very young age and has been practicing and performing the art form for more than two decades. Barkha has been trained in the Jaipur and Lucknow style of Kathak by her Guru, Rachna Sarang.
Under her Guru’s guidance, Barkha has had several years of choreographic and performance experience. She assisted teaching productions such as Dashavatar (10 incarnations of Lord Vishnu) and Kathak Steps (technical pieces) that have been presented both in the United States and India. This performance production required Barkha to, not only to perform in a two hour show but also required her to book performance venues, design playbills and costumes, create lighting cues and train other dancers.
Barkha has travelled to different cities in U.S and India (Gujarat, Bangalore, Chennai, etc) to perform Kathak solos. Additional notable performances have been for former Prime Minister of India, Atal Bihari Vajpayee and music virtuoso Pandit Jarajji while some performances have been alongside musicians such as Rakesh Chaurasia, U. Rajesh and Ghatam Udupa.
Barkha completed her Master’s in Kathak Performing Arts from the Kalidasa Sanskrit University in Nagpur, India (2014-2016). To further deepen her understanding of other dance forms and complement her training in Kathak, Barkha is training in Bharatanatyam with Deepak Mazumdar and Hindustani rhythm with Pandit Divyang Vakil.
As community outreach, BDC conducts classes in New York (Long Island, Manhattan) and New Jersey (Jersey City, Edgewater, Parsippany). The Kathak dance classes help students become more aware of their physical strength and grace but also learn the history and culture of the Indian heritage.
